What is a Brand Guideline?
A brand guideline is a comprehensive document that outlines how your brand should be represented across various mediums and platforms. It ensures consistency in how your brand is presented, making it easily recognisable and professional. Brand guidelines inform clients and partners on how to use your brand assets correctly, including your logo, colours, typography, imagery, and tone of voice.
Here's a basic outline of what you can include in your brand guidelines:
1. Brand Overview
-
Mission and Values: A short description of your brand's mission, core values, and vision.
-
Brand Story: A brief narrative about the history and purpose of your brand.
2. Logo Usage
-
Primary Logo: The main logo of your brand.
-
Secondary Logos: Any variations of your logo (e.g., horizontal, vertical, icon-only).
-
Clear Space: The minimum amount of space around the logo to ensure visibility and legibility.
-
Logo Misuse: Examples of incorrect logo usage (e.g., distorted, altered colors, or placed on conflicting backgrounds).
3. Colour Palette
-
Primary Colours: Main colours that represent your brand.
-
Secondary Colours: Supporting colours that complement the primary palette.
-
Colour Codes: Provide the specific colour codes (HEX, RGB, CMYK) for digital and print consistency.
4. Typography
-
Primary Typeface: The main font used in your brand materials (e.g., for headlines or body text).
-
Secondary Typeface: A complementary font for additional text or alternative usage.
-
Web Fonts: If different from print fonts, specify the web-safe fonts for your website.
The Style Guide is a document that covers:
Fonts used, Pantone colours in your logo and also the breakdown of those colours.
